→ Hostel World, specialist in hostels
It is one of the pioneers in accommodation reservations. Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Dublin, Ireland. It focuses on hostels, but also has some inns in the catalog. The website was renewed this year and it is now easier to understand the details of each hostel. In some cases, it allows full refund of the reservation in cases of cancellation. Present in 178 countries.

- Personal experience: I’ve used it a few times and never had any problems. I stopped using it because the site was outdated and slow, but now it is up to date and competitive again.
→ Booking, the world’s largest booking site
Currently the favorite site of Brazilians. Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It probably has the largest catalog in the world in terms of number of hotels and inns. On the hostel front, it is a strong competitor to Hostel World, often offering the same property for an even lower price.

- Personal experience: I’ve used it many times and it’s almost always the cheapest website to book a hostel. Quite reliable. If you need assistance, it’s easy to get in touch via email and phone.
→ Hostel Bookers
It is part of the Hostel World Group. So much so that if you click on the “about us” link on the website, you will be redirected to Hostel World. Despite being part of the same company, the hostel catalog and prices are different. Smaller and less publicized in Brazil, it is an equally reliable and safe site to make your hostel reservation.

- Personal experience: I’ve used it once, with no problems. I trusted precisely because I am part of Hostel World.
→ Airbnb – Yes, there are now hostels there
The initial idea of Airbnb was that ordinary people could host travelers in their own homes. Then came the possibility of reserving an entire apartment and even suites in hotels, inns and hostels. The hostel catalog doesn’t compare to the giants above. But it is possible to find good options.

- Personal experience: to book a hostel, I only used it once. At the time, despite having found the same hostel on Booking.com and it being a little cheaper there, I preferred to book through Airbnb because it offered breakfast at no extra charge, being a better value for money.
→ Hostelling International
Before the internet, there was already Hostelling Internacional, better known by the acronym HI. It is an international federation that brings together hostel associations from dozens of countries, some of them with almost 100 years of existence. Until the beginning of the 2000s, being part of HI was a kind of seal of quality for hostels, a relevance that it lost to the big travel portals. But, even today, it is possible to request a HI membership card, which offers a 10% discount at the network’s hostels, among other benefits. It claims to be a non-profit entity and allows online booking.

- Personal experience: I have never booked through the website. I’ve stayed in hostels with the quality seal, but I didn’t notice anything special.
→ Hostel Club
Italian company based in Venice. It has thousands of properties in its catalogue, although the main focus is on Europe, mainly Italy. It is also possible to find one or another advertisement for inns and hotels, including in Brazilian cities. But the focus is really on hostels.

- Personal experience: I used it twice, in Venice and Florence. It’s been awhile and at the time they required the printed booking confirmation. I hope that has changed.
