The CN Tower is the tallest building in Toronto and Canada. It is 553 meters high and its main observation deck, the Observation Deck, is 342 meters high. I thought the ticket was expensive, but the view from the top is so impressive that I am able to say that the visit is worth it.
The full ticket price for adults is 38 Canadian Dollars (CAD). But with fees and taxes, I was charged the final amount of 42.94 CAD. Converting, R$ 122 in today’s quotation. And for other viewpoints and activities, the price is even higher. Too expensive for a simple elevator ride, right ?
Really. It’s not up for debate. In Brazil, no viewpoint charges such absurdity. For example, a tour package to Christ the Redeemer, in Rio de Janeiro, including transportation and tickets, costs an average of R$70. But repeating the mantra WHO CONVERTS DOESN’T HAVE FUN, off I went to the CN Tower observatory.
About the CN Tower
Third tallest tower in the world, the CN Tower opened in 1976 and is 553 meters high. For comparison, the Eiffel Tower is 300 meters and the Empire State Building in NYC is 373 meters. It was built so that radio and TV signals would not be blocked by the skyscrapers of downtown Toronto.
CN Tower opening hours
• Observatories: from 9 am to 10:30 pm
• Restaurante 360: from 11 am to 3:15 pm for lunch and from 3:30 pm to 10:15 pm for dinner
• La Cafe: from 10 am to 8 pm
• Gift shop: from 9am to 10:30pm
where to buy tickets
I bought it on site, at the ticket office at the foot of the tower. They accept cash and card. I arrived in the late afternoon and there was no queue. It is also possible to buy in advance through the official website, which charges the same prices as the physical ticket office. It is also possible to book a table at the restaurant through the website, which should only be necessary in high season and special dates, such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve. If you prefer, you can combine the visit with this night tour in Toronto, which has a ticket included, a tour guide and, before the tower, it passes by several tourist attractions.
Viewpoints and Activities at the CN Tower
• Tower Experience
Ticket prices: 38 CAD Adults, 34 CAD Seniors over 65 and 28 CAD Children between 4 and 12 years old. Free for children up to 4 years old.
The main observation deck, the Observation Deck, is 342 meters high. That’s where you pay the 38 CAD ticket called the Tower Experience. With this ticket, you have access to 2 floors of the observation deck. On the main platform, there is a friendly café and a 360º view of Toronto. You can see the long expanse of Lake Ontario, the beauty of the Toronto Islands, the planes coming and going at Billy Bishop Airport, Union Station, Scotiabank Arena and, at the foot of the tower, the Rogers Centre, Toronto Blue Jays baseball stadium, who was even in the field during my visit. As well as some of the top 7 beaches in Toronto.
On this main platform there is a café and Restaurante 360. By taking the stairs, it is possible to access, at no extra cost, a floor without glass around it, only with railings. Pure wind. It’s the best place to feel that you are actually that high. With the same ticket, you can also go to the part where you walk on the glass. Yes, at more than 300 meters high, part of the platform’s floor is made of ultra-resistant glass, which, according to them, can withstand the weight of several elephants. As the glass is thick and already scratched up, I walked on it and it didn’t seem so scary.
Tower Experience + Skypod
Ticket prices: 53 CAD Adults, 49 CAD Seniors over 65 and 43 CAD Children between 4 and 12 years old. Free for children up to 4 years old.
This slightly more expensive ticket gives access to everything considered in the basic ticket, and even goes up to what they call Skypod. This is the highest observation deck of the CN Tower, at 447 meters high. The platform is much narrower and only one elevator takes you there. Thus, even on weekdays, the wait for this extra climb is usually almost 1 hour. I’ve read reports that it’s not worth it.
• Tower Experience + Edge Walk
Ticket prices: 225 CAD and is only allowed for people above 13 years old
If the elevator already gives you butterflies and the view from the heights can make you dizzy, imagine walking tied to the side of the tower, from the outside. Because that’s what the Edge Walk experience is all about. It seemed like a foolishness valid only for those who have zero fear of heights and have many dollars to spare, after all the ticket is much more expensive.
Tips for visiting the CN Tower
Best rosary: I recommend visiting the CN Tower around sunset. At the time of my trip, in late September, it was around 7pm. So I went up at 5:30 pm. So I took many photos during the day and watched the spectacular sunset from the top. As everyone has the same idea, get ready to compete for space with other well-informed tourists. Afterwards, also see how it is at night in Toronto, with the big buildings illuminated.
Clothes: the main deck is completely glazed and well fenced. There is no wind and it has heating and air conditioning, so it is pleasant all year round. But to go to the floor surrounded only by railings, it’s good to be well wrapped up. I imagine it’s impossible to walk there during the winter.
Store: at the base of the tower there is a cafe and a gift shop, accessible even for those who did not buy tickets. The store has all kinds of junk like mugs, pens, key chains, fridge magnets, stuffed moose, maple syrup and whatever you can imagine, all with the Canadian flag.

So is the CN Tower worth visiting?
As I said at the beginning, I think it was worth it, which is only due to the really incredible view from the top. In addition to being the main icon of Toronto and one of the most famous buildings in Canada and the world. That walk on the glass is not all that stuff and the restaurant is very expensive. But the view makes up for it.
I won’t go so far as to say that it’s an essential tour, after all it’s just a lookout point and the ticket costs more than R$100. But without a doubt it’s one of the best possible activities in Toronto and that will add that extra charm to the trip.
