The Sony WF-1000XM4 are truly wireless headphones that take noise cancelling and audio quality to the next level. They’re designed to fit your ear perfectly and adapt to your environment for a personalised listening experience.
The XM4 features 6mm drivers, an improved V1 digital processor and support for Sony’s DSEE Extreme upscaling technology. This means that these earbuds can generate Hi-Res audio that’s comparable to that of wired headphones.
Sound is excellent on these headphones, with a warm but well defined bass that goes deep and natural-sounding mids. You can also hear some slight dips in the treble, which are a result of Sony de-emphasizing the high end compared to its previous model. This makes the sound a little more muted and lacking some of the bite that other bass-focused earbuds have, but it’s still enjoyable enough.
Noise-cancelling is very good on these buds, with street noises registering as around half as loud as they would when wearing a pair of earbuds without ANC. You’ll find that they’re best used in a quiet room or with headphones, however, as the foam tips aren’t quite as good at isolating noise from your ears as some of the bigger, more expensive models on the market.
Battery life is pretty excellent on these earbuds, too. You can get 12 hours of playtime from a single charge and 24 with the charging case, which has Qi wireless charging as well as wired charging via a USB Type-C cable. You can also top up the case from your phone using Bluetooth or a standard micro USB port, though that will take longer than a five-minute quick charge.
Talking over the phone is a breeze with these earbuds thanks to a very solid microphone. You can change the mic’s sensitivity to suit your needs, but I wouldn’t recommend changing it too much as it’s sensitive to other sounds too.
In addition to the excellent microphone, the WF-1000XM4’s also have a handy feature that allows you to pause music when you answer your phone. This is called Speak-to-Chat and it works very well, especially during a conversation, as it’s triggered as soon as you start speaking.
You’ll have to toggle it on in the Headphones Connect app to turn it on, but it’s worth having as it means that you can have a call and listen to music at the same time. It also lets you choose how long the mode will stay active after speech, with a “short” option of five seconds or a “standard” option of 15 seconds.
The earbuds themselves are very comfortable, with plenty of cushioning on the outside of each bud. They’re a bit larger than other pairs of buds I’ve tested, and I found them to fit my ears well.
I’d definitely recommend these earbuds to anyone looking for the best wireless headphones on the market today, even if it’s a few dollars more than the competition. They’re a great choice for anyone who wants a pair of earbuds with excellent audio and noise-cancelling performance, and they’ll save you a lot of money in the long run by being able to use them over and over again.
